East coast Australia campervan itinerary that actually fits the days

The east coast is 2,400km from Sydney to Cairns and almost everyone tries to do it in less time than it takes. This is a route built around what three weeks can actually absorb, with the honest note on what to cut if you only have two.

The shape of the trip

Three weeks gives you roughly 1,800km of driving days and nine or ten nights where you stay put for two nights or more. That ratio is the difference between a holiday and a delivery run. If you drive every single day you will remember the road and nothing else.

The route: Sydney south coast first, then north through the Hunter, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Byron, the Gold Coast, Fraser, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Mission Beach and Cairns. That is the canonical version. The version below trims the southern loop and puts the saved days into Queensland, which is where the trip gets good.

Days 1-4: Sydney to Byron Bay

Leave Sydney early and take the coast road rather than the Hume. Jervis Bay for a night — Hyams Beach, Booderee — then Batemans Bay, then a long day to Coffs Harbour. Byron on day four.

Two nights in Byron is enough. The town is small, the beaches are the point, and camping is expensive and tightly enforced. Do not plan to sleep in the van on a street.

Days 5-8: Byron to the Sunshine Coast

Cross into Queensland at Coolangatta and the pace changes. The Gold Coast hinterland — Springbrook, Binna Burra — is worth a detour for the rainforest walks and the lookouts, and it is fifteen degrees cooler than the coast.

Then Noosa, the Great Sandy National Park, and Fraser Island if your vehicle is suitable. Note that Fraser requires a 4WD and a permit; a two-wheel-drive campervan cannot go.

Days 9-14: the Queensland coast to Airlie Beach

This is the long stretch. Bundaberg, Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy, then Rockhampton and Mackay. Agnes Water is the stop most people skip and most people regret skipping — it is the southernmost surf beach on the reef coast and it is quiet.

Airlie Beach deserves three nights: one to arrive, one full day on a Whitsundays trip, one to recover. Book the sailing before you leave home.

Days 15-21: Airlie to Cairns

Townsville, then Mission Beach — where the rainforest meets the reef and the cassowaries walk through the campground — then the waterfall circuit inland from Cairns: Millaa Millaa, Zillie, Ellinjaa.

Arrive in Cairns with two days spare, not one. Reef trips leave early and weather cancels them, so having a spare morning is the difference between seeing the reef and not. Cairns is also the depot where a one-way hire ends most cleanly.

What to cut if you have two weeks

Cut the south coast entirely and start in Sydney heading straight north. Skip the Gold Coast. Do one night at Airlie instead of three and take a day trip rather than an overnight sail. Accept that you are doing the coast as a sampler rather than a tour.

The one thing not to cut is the buffer at the end. Every east coast itinerary that goes wrong goes wrong in the last three days, because a delayed reef trip or a closed road eats the margin you did not leave.

FAQ

Questions about this

How long does the east coast take in a campervan?

Three weeks is comfortable for Sydney to Cairns. Two weeks is possible if you drive most days and skip the southern loop.

Can you drive Fraser Island in a campervan?

No. Fraser Island requires a high-clearance 4WD and a vehicle permit. Standard campervans are not permitted.

Which direction is better on the east coast?

Northbound in the dry season (May to October) puts you in Queensland when it is at its best and keeps the sun behind you.
